NFPA Released Report On Fatal Firefighter Injuries In The U.S

Zen Newswire Fire NFPA Released Report On Fatal Firefighter Injuries In The U.S September 17, 2024 Fire The 2023 report by the National Fire Protection Association showcases significant reductions in deaths among firefighters compared to the previous year, 2022, and still stands as the second-highest number recorded since 2013.  The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has released their ‘Fatal Firefighter Injuries in the U.S. in 2023’ report. This newly released report showcased significant reductions in fatalities among career firefighters, which accounted for a 23 percent decline from 39 deaths in 2022 to 30 deaths in 2023.  The 2023 report shows a total of 89 on-duty U.S. firefighter fatalities, showcasing an eight percent decline over the 97 fatal injuries in 2022. Among these, 50 were volunteer firefighters, and 30 were career fighters. Apart from them, there were nine non-municipal firefighter fatalities, encompassing five full-time state forestry rangers, one state forestry contractor, one full-time federal forest service firefighter, and two military firefighters.  Although there has been a decline in the number of fatalities in 2023 as compared to the numbers in 2022, 89 deaths stand as the second-highest number recorded since 2013, when the on-duty fatal injuries reported stood at 98.  The increase in the number of fatalities over the past two years reflects the inclusion of cardiac arrest deaths and strokes or aneurysms that occurred within 24 hours of duty. Contrary to this, these deaths were previously not considered unless there was a physical complaint specifically stating the above conditions while the firefighter was on duty. Now, they are taken irrespective of reported symptoms while on duty.  Jay Petrillo, a fire data analyst at NFPA and co-author of the report, said, “The fatalities due to rapid-fire progression and structural collapses may be at least partially due to the fact that today’s fires burn hotter and faster. Fortunately, within the fire service there is certainly recognition of the importance of improving knowledge about fire behavior and fire dynamics in order to better protect firefighter safety and health.” With the vast majority of 48 fatalities suffering from cardiac deaths, more than one-half (54%) of the fatalities succumbed to overexertion and strain in 2023. According to the report, preventive measures such as fitness programs, yearly medical evaluations, and medical monitoring can contribute to effective cardiac health. However, with the predominance of volunteer firefighters among sudden cardiac deaths within 24 hours, additional areas of intervention can help dig deeper into the issue and help prevent such situations. “While the overall downward trend in the annual number of firefighter fatalities is an encouraging indication that injury prevention efforts through the years are having an impact, there is a still a clear need for continuing attention to firefighter safety and health,” said Richard Campbell, senior research analyst at NFPA who co-authored the report with Petrillo. “Sudden cardiac deaths remain a critical concern, with the inclusion of deaths within 24 hours of duty bringing the issue into sharper focus.” Other than cardiac deaths, trauma injuries also contributed towards one-third of deaths — which included 18 firefighter fatalities in vehicle crashes. This number represents the highest number of vehicle crash fatalities since 2008. The 2023 report also highlights four multiple fatality incidents in 2023 that contributed to the death of more than one firefighter. One of the incidents included the death of three lives, while the remaining accounted for the deaths of two firefighters each.  Even though these numbers represent a decrease over the six multiple-fatality incidents reported in 2022, the numbers this year account for the third time since 2014, when the number of multiple-fatality incidents recorded was four or more.      For more information, visit the official website of NFPA.    If you enjoyed this article and want more valuable industry content like this, click here to read more articles!    Source: NFPA About author cmsmasters Cmsmasters Studio is a union of 25 people who are completely into innovative website design and progressive website development. NFPA And Joey Gase Motorsports Team Up To Increase Fire Safety Awareness For Communities

Zen Newswire Fire NFPA And Joey Gase Motorsports Team Up To Increase Fire Safety Awareness For Communities September 17, 2024 Fire The Yard FLX community event on September 12 and NASCAR Xfinity Series race on September 14 will feature Joey Gase along with Sparky the Fire Dog to increase fire safety awareness among communities.  The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control, and Joey Gase Motorsports are collaborating to emphasize the importance of fire safety for communities in Upstate New York. This partnership between NFPA, fire officials, and Joey Gase is a joint effort to promote the upcoming Fire Prevention Week (FPW), which will happen around October 6th to 12th. This year’s FPW campaign theme is “ Smoke Alarms: Make them work for you.”  On September 12th, NFPA and Gase, joined by local and state public safety officials, will host the event at the Yard FLX go-kart track from 4 to 7 p.m. The area will be open to the public and area residents, who will have the opportunity to meet Gase and check out his race car on display. Some attendees will get the chance to race against Gase while the festivities are ongoing.  Lorraine Carli, Vice President of Outreach and Advocacy at NFPA, said, “Our work with Joey has demonstrated the value and impact of delivering potentially life-saving fire safety messages to thousands of NASCAR fans and surrounding communities. Continuing our work together helps further these messages and maximize the reach and impact of Fire Prevention Week, our biggest public awareness campaign of the year.” During the event, attendees will also participate in fire safety activities, highlighting the importance of working smoke alarms and having a home escape plan. This includes a fire safety house provided by the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control. Also present will be the NFPA mascot, Sparky the Fire Dog, who will be on-site to greet the coming guests and take pictures with them.  On Saturday, September 14th, at 3:30 p.m., NASA will sponsor Gase in a series of NASCAR race events, including the NASCAR Xfinity Series event at the Watkins Glen Speedway. New York State Fire Administrator James B. Cable said, “We are pleased to partner with NFPA on this family-friendly event. Helping educate the community about fire safety, especially in the home, can go a long way to prevent the devastation that can come with a fire.” 2024 Fire Prevention Week focuses on the importance of having working smoke alarms in our homes. According to a recent NFPA report, the leading cause of most home fire deaths in the U.S. is the lack of working or no smoke alarms in residences. NFPA’s latest smoke alarms report showcases how smoke alarms reduce the risk of dying in a fire by more than half.  “It’s an honor to work with NFPA and help remind people that home fires can and do still happen and that they need to be prepared in the event of one,” said Joey Gase, owner and driver for Joey Gase Motorsports. “My hope in working together is that we can motivate people to take action around home fire safety, which includes taking simple but important steps like making sure they have working smoke alarms in their homes and testing them regularly.”     For more information, visit the official website of NFPA.    If you enjoyed this article and want more valuable industry content like this, click here to read more articles!    Source: NFPA About author cmsmasters Cmsmasters Studio is a union of 25 people who are completely into innovative website design and progressive website development.
